Can We Rock?

about

I’m really proud of this new album, so I’m sharing one track of the new album a day and some fun background on it. First, is the album opener: “Can We Rock?”
I’ve shared the official video for this song before, but this is the album version, not the single, so it has an extended intro with a weird backstory.
A few years ago, we noticed a German rock band from Hereford also calling themselves Cark. Rather than make a fuss, we followed all their social media and cheer them on. I especially liked their music video where they punch Nazis.
One of their tunes, “Hymn For Motherfuckers,” had a great intro riff, and shouts of “oi!”, so I figured it out on a synthesizer, and programmed it as a little electronic tune. Then we sampled them shouting “oi!” to use as a count-in. We figured it’s a fair trade; our name for their oi. They can cover us too if they want.
The song was originally called “Can You Rock in Singapore?” and was written when Dustin got his first overseas job. It was in Singapore and all we really knew was that it had some pretty harsh laws. We didn’t expect Cark to continue at that point. But it was a real open question if Dustin could play in another band there or not. But when brainstorming material for this album, we remembered the song, but not how it went. All either of us could remember was the main riff and the hook “can you rock?”. So we reimagined it to be about aging, which I think is a legitimate question.
I love this song, and think the intro really sets a tone. But as Levar Burton used to say, don’t take my word for it. Listen to the album cut at the link.
More tomorrow—and stay tuned for the ultra-special return of German Cark later in the record.

lyrics

Oi, Oi
Ladies and gentlemen, are you ready for Cark?

Started this band in the salad days
Now we are pushing middle age

Screaming babies, creaking knees
Bill collectors that would like some more please

It makes you want to scream and shout
Just what rock should be about
But we keep wondering

Can we rock
Can we roll
Now that we are so old
Can we rock anymore

Are you free next week to play?
Or will it take six months to find a day?
Now a sponge for angst instead of a spitfire
Have to play slow songs so we don’t get tired

It makes you want to scream and shout
Just what rock should be about
But we keep wondering

Can we rock
Can we roll
Now that we are so old
Can we rock anymore

Supposed to explode, not decay
Burn out not fade away
Everyone tells us rock is a summer’s day

But we’re still underground
Our hearts still bleed sound
So let’s bring that chorus back around
With no more wondering

Can we rock
Can we roll
Now that we are so old
Can we rock?
