about

Today's "Seven Days of CARK" song is "Bombrush." And I feel it's kind of the best representation of the spirit of this EP.
For this project, Dustin sent me drum tracks. Not parts written and performed to songs that existed, but single-miced, unmixed tapes of him just playing the drums however he felt like it. No parts. No sections. No plans. Just him jamming for three or four minutes at a time. I didn't edit or sample them. I just played guitar to them. Wherever he went, I had to follow. Consequently, the idea of a verse/chorus structure sometimes went out the window altogether, and the phrases and sections were a bit erratic and oddly-timed, or he'd just switch gears altogether and play something else altogether like at the end of this song, and I had to go with it. You can hear it pretty clearly here in the way it bounces back and forth between the different sections without a lot of warning or consistency.
Also, he gave all the tracks gibberish names, so those became the lyrics—which stayed true to our core songwriting style.
The overall result was something pretty different than what we'd done before. There were a lot more droning riffs than rapid-fire three chord tunes. That opened up some cool textural opportunities, like the "Nice Hat," setting on my keyboard, which is featured prominently on this tune, and it forced me to be a more thoughtful and intentional guitar player, since there was no way for him to adjust his parts to match whatever I slopped out, so that fell to me. I became a much better musician when I started playing with Dustin because he forced me to keep up, and to constantly re-invent my songwriting procesc, and that growth started up again while recording this EP. I think it can be heard really clearly on this tune, as it's something I can't imagine writing for any other band I've ever played in.
